Bybit flagged you for
AML review?

Bybit's AML compliance system flagged your account for review. As Bybit has rapidly expanded from a derivatives-focused platform to a full-service exchange, their AML monitoring has become increasingly sophisticated — and increasingly aggressive with false positives. Their system screens transactions in real-time but provides minimal feedback when it flags an issue. You may only know you're under AML review because withdrawals stopped working or your account was restricted. Our lead partner, a former Senior AML/CFT Investigator at a European FIU, knows exactly how AML systems generate flags and how to build responses that resolve them.

Understanding this Bybit issue

Bybit's AML evolution: Originally a derivatives-only platform with minimal compliance, Bybit has rapidly built out its AML infrastructure in response to regulatory pressure. This means their system is newer and sometimes less refined than established exchanges like Binance or Coinbase — more aggressive with flags, slower to process reviews, and less transparent about requirements.

Bybit-specific AML triggers: Derivatives manipulation patterns (wash trading, layering through leverage), rapid movement between spot and derivatives accounts, high-volume P2P trading, deposits from addresses flagged by their analytics provider, and cross-exchange arbitrage patterns that resemble money laundering structuring.

The Bybit AML process gap: Unlike Kraken (which publishes their entire AML framework) or Coinbase (which has formal SAR procedures), Bybit's AML review process is largely undocumented publicly. This makes self-resolution extremely difficult because you don't know what they're looking for. We fill this knowledge gap through experience handling hundreds of Bybit AML cases.

What you'll see

Bybit AML review notifications

  • "Account under risk review": Bybit's compliance team is conducting an AML review of your account. Trading and withdrawals may be restricted. The notification does not specify which transactions triggered the review.
  • "Withdrawal function suspended pending review": Withdrawals are blocked while the AML review is conducted. Trading may or may not still be enabled — but we advise against trading during an AML review.
  • "Please provide Source of Funds documentation": Bybit is requesting SoF evidence for specific flagged transactions. This is a direct AML trigger — not a routine KYC check.
  • Derivatives-specific AML notification: If your AML review was triggered by derivatives trading patterns, you may receive a notification referencing "trading irregularities" or "risk management review" rather than standard AML language. This is Bybit's risk team flagging patterns that resemble market manipulation or layering.
Timeline

How long Bybit AML reviews last

Bybit does not publish official SLAs for AML reviews. Based on our case experience:

  • Standard AML review: 5-15 business days with complete documentation. Bybit's compliance team processes the documentation and makes a determination.
  • Derivatives-related AML review: 2-6 weeks. These take longer because Bybit must analyze trading patterns, not just fund origins.
  • Complex AML review: 4-8 weeks for cases involving P2P counterparty issues, cross-border activity, or large transaction volumes.
  • Law enforcement-related AML review: No published timeline. If Bybit received a law enforcement request, the review may persist for months. Bybit cooperates with law enforcement globally — their involvement in the Lazarus Group investigation demonstrated this.
Common mistakes

What not to do during a Bybit AML review

  • Continuing to trade derivatives during the review: Each new trade during an AML review creates additional data that the compliance team must analyze, extending the review. Also, derivatives trading patterns can trigger additional AML flags.
  • Not disclosing derivatives positions: If you have open futures or margin positions, you must disclose them. Bybit's compliance team will discover them, and nondisclosure looks like concealment.
  • Using VPN during the review: Bybit detects geographic inconsistencies. Using a VPN during an AML review will trigger additional security flags and may result in immediate account suspension.
  • Expecting Bybit support to explain the AML trigger: Bybit's support team rarely provides specific reasons for AML reviews. Do not wait for support to tell you what triggered the review — we identify the likely trigger through account analysis and prepare documentation proactively.
FAQ

Bybit AML Review questions

How does Bybit's AML system work?

Bybit uses automated transaction monitoring that screens deposits, withdrawals, and trading patterns in real-time. When their system flags suspicious activity, your account enters a compliance review queue. The system has become increasingly sophisticated as Bybit has grown, but it generates many false positives — especially for derivatives traders whose complex trading patterns can mimic money laundering typologies. We understand these false positive patterns and prepare documentation that addresses the specific flag.

What documents does Bybit need for AML review?

Bybit typically requests: government ID (if KYC isn't complete), Source of Funds documentation for flagged transactions, explanations of trading patterns that triggered the flag, and in some cases video verification. The specific requirements depend on what their AML system flagged. Unlike Binance (which sometimes tells you what to submit), Bybit often just restricts your account without specifying what documentation is needed. We determine the requirements based on the flag type.

Can Bybit's AML flag follow me to other exchanges?

Indirectly yes. Blockchain analytics providers (Chainalysis, Elliptic) maintain shared risk databases. If Bybit flagged your address and it appears in these databases, other exchanges may flag the same address when you deposit. A SAR filed by Bybit also goes to government databases accessible by other financial institutions. Resolving the AML review on Bybit — rather than just moving funds elsewhere — is the safer long-term approach.

How long does Bybit AML review take?

Bybit publishes no official timeline. In our experience: 2-6 weeks without professional help, commonly stretching longer because support tickets go unresponsive. With our involvement, we typically achieve resolution in 1-3 weeks because we submit compliance narratives directly to Bybit's legal/compliance team rather than through standard support.
