Peer-to-Peer Trading Disputes

P2P Crypto Trade Frozen? Account Blocked? We Resolve It.

Peer-to-peer crypto platforms promise freedom from centralized control — but trades go wrong, accounts get flagged, and fiat payments get reversed. When a P2P trade freezes your crypto or your counterparty disappears, you need legal action, not a support ticket.

The P2P problem

Why P2P crypto trades freeze — and why they are harder to resolve

P2P crypto platforms connect buyers and sellers directly. The platform provides an escrow mechanism — it holds the crypto until the buyer confirms fiat payment — but it does not custody the fiat. This creates a unique risk profile that centralized exchanges do not have: the fiat payment can be reversed (chargeback, bank recall, fraud claim) after the crypto has been released from escrow.

When a P2P trade goes wrong, the typical scenario is: the buyer sends fiat to the seller, the seller releases crypto from escrow, and then the buyer's bank reverses the fiat payment (claiming fraud, unauthorized transaction, or chargeback). The seller is left with no fiat and no crypto. Alternatively, the buyer sends fiat, the seller refuses to release crypto from escrow, and the platform's dispute resolution process takes weeks or months — during which the crypto is locked.

P2P platforms have limited compliance teams and limited ability to reverse transactions. Bisq is fully decentralized (no company to contact). Hodl Hodl uses multisig escrow but has a small team. Binance P2P has the largest volume but its dispute process is opaque. Understanding the specific platform's architecture and dispute resolution process is essential for recovery.

Platforms

P2P platforms we work with

Binance P2P

The largest P2P platform by volume. Binance P2P uses an escrow system where Binance holds the crypto until the buyer confirms payment. Disputes are handled by Binance's customer support — but the process is slow (7-30 days) and decisions are final. Common issues: buyer chargebacks after crypto release, fake payment receipts, and account flags triggered by P2P counterparty risk (if your trade partner is later flagged for fraud, your account may be restricted).

Bisq

A fully decentralized P2P exchange — no company, no KYC, no central server. Trades use 2-of-3 multisig escrow on Bitcoin. Disputes are resolved by Bisq arbitrators (community members), not by a company. If a trade goes wrong and the arbitrator rules against you, there is no appeal process — the arbitrator's decision is final. Legal action against Bisq itself is not possible (there is no legal entity). However, if you can identify the counterparty (through bank transfer records), you can pursue legal action against them directly.

Hodl Hodl

A non-custodial P2P exchange using multisig escrow. Hodl Hodl requires KYC for some trades and has a dispute resolution process. Common issues: escrow disputes where the seller refuses to release crypto after receiving fiat, and account suspensions triggered by the platform's AML screening. Hodl Hodl is operated by Hodl Hodl OÜ (Estonia), which means EU consumer protection law applies.

Robosats

A Lightning Network-based P2P exchange that emphasizes privacy. Trades use Lightning hold invoices as escrow. There is no company and no KYC. Disputes are minimal because the protocol design limits trade sizes and uses reputation-based trust. However, if a Lightning payment fails or a hold invoice expires, funds can be stuck temporarily. There is no support team — resolution requires understanding Lightning's technical mechanics.

Paxful (and successors)

Paxful shut down in 2023, but many users still have frozen funds on the platform or unresolved disputes from before the shutdown. Paxful's bankruptcy proceedings are ongoing. If you had funds on Paxful when it shut down, you may need to file a claim in the bankruptcy proceedings. Several Paxful alternatives (Noones, Remitano) have similar architectures and similar dispute patterns.

LocalBitcoins (defunct)

LocalBitcoins shut down in 2023. Users who had funds on the platform at shutdown should have withdrawn — but some did not receive the notification in time. Claims against LocalBitcoins Oy (Finland) must go through Finnish insolvency proceedings. If you missed the withdrawal window, contact us to assess whether a claim is still possible.

How we help

Our approach to P2P disputes

For escrow disputes (crypto held in escrow)

If your crypto is locked in a P2P escrow because the counterparty disputes the trade, we prepare the documentation proving you fulfilled your obligations (bank transfer confirmation, chat logs, trade terms) and submit it to the platform's dispute resolution team. For Binance P2P, this involves escalating through the compliance channel. For Hodl Hodl, this involves formal correspondence with the Estonian entity. For Bisq, we help you prepare your case for the arbitrator.

For chargeback fraud (fiat reversed after crypto release)

If a buyer received your crypto and then reversed the fiat payment, this is fraud. We trace the crypto to its current location (which exchange it was deposited to), send a legal request to that exchange to freeze the stolen funds, and pursue civil claims against the buyer (identified through bank transfer records). This is effectively a fraud recovery case that originated on a P2P platform.

For account suspensions on P2P platforms

If your Binance P2P or Hodl Hodl account is suspended due to AML flags (typically triggered by trading with a flagged counterparty), we resolve it the same way as any exchange account freeze: source-of-funds documentation, legal correspondence with the compliance team, and regulatory escalation if necessary.

For defunct platforms (Paxful, LocalBitcoins)

If a P2P platform has shut down and you still have funds locked, we assess whether a claim is possible in the insolvency proceedings. This requires identifying the legal entity, the jurisdiction of the proceedings, and the claims deadline. In some cases, funds were transferred to a successor platform — we trace where your assets went and whether they can be recovered.

FAQ

P2P crypto disputes — frequently asked questions

The buyer reversed the bank transfer after I released my crypto on Binance P2P. What can I do?

This is chargeback fraud. First, preserve all evidence: trade screenshots, chat logs, bank transfer confirmation, and the buyer's payment details (name, bank account). Second, trace where the buyer sent your crypto — if they deposited it on an exchange, we can send a freezing request to that exchange. Third, file a police report for fraud. We handle all three steps. Speed matters: if the crypto is still on an exchange, it can be frozen before the scammer withdraws.

Binance P2P locked my account because my trade partner was flagged. What do I do?

Binance's system flags accounts that traded with subsequently-flagged users — even if you had no knowledge of the counterparty's activity. This is "guilt by association" in the AML screening system. To resolve it, you need to provide source-of-funds documentation proving your side of the trade was legitimate (you were selling crypto you lawfully acquired, receiving fiat through a legitimate bank transfer). We prepare this documentation and handle communication with Binance compliance. See our Binance unlock page.

My Bisq trade is in dispute and the arbitrator ruled against me. Can I appeal?

Bisq's arbitration system does not have a formal appeal process — the arbitrator's decision is implemented through the multisig escrow. However, if you believe the arbitrator's decision was wrong (e.g., the counterparty submitted forged evidence), you can identify the counterparty through the bank transfer details and pursue a civil claim against them directly. Bisq itself cannot be sued because there is no legal entity.

I had funds on Paxful when it shut down. Can I still recover them?

Paxful's shutdown process included a withdrawal window, but some users missed it. The status of remaining funds depends on the ongoing insolvency proceedings. Contact us with the details of your Paxful account (username, approximate balance, last access date) and we will assess whether a claim is still viable.

Are P2P trades anonymous? Can the counterparty be identified?

No. Even on platforms without KYC (Bisq, Robosats), the fiat payment leg creates a paper trail. Bank transfers reveal the sender's name and account number. SEPA transfers include IBAN and name. If the counterparty defrauded you, they can be identified through their bank details — and in the EU, banks are required to share this information with law enforcement upon request.

How much does P2P dispute resolution cost?

For escrow disputes and account suspensions: Fixed Fee from €399. For chargeback fraud cases (tracing + freezing + legal action): Success Fee (% of recovered amount). Free initial assessment to determine which model applies to your case.
