Someone you met online gained your emotional trust, then asked you to send crypto to a Changelly swap address — "investment," "emergency," "travel." Changelly is a non-custodial crypto swap service (not an exchange) — it doesn't hold user funds. This creates a unique recovery challenge: the scammer may have used Changelly to swap your funds to a different cryptocurrency before withdrawing. However, Changelly has a 24-hour refund window and IP/KYC records. We trace your transfers and file requests with Changelly's compliance team.
In a Changelly romance scam, the scammer builds emotional trust through dating apps, social media, or messaging platforms. They declare love, plan a future together, and create urgency around financial needs. The requests start small and escalate over months to tens of thousands of euros. Each transfer goes to a Changelly deposit address the scammer controls.
Why scammers use Changelly for romance scams: Changelly is a non-custodial swap service — it doesn't hold user accounts or balances. The scammer provides a "from" address (where they send funds) and a "to" address (where they receive the swapped crypto). Changelly processes the swap and doesn't hold funds beyond the swap duration. This makes recovery harder — but not impossible. Changelly records the IP address, KYC (for larger swaps), and the destination address for each swap.
The "swap and disappear" pattern: A common Changelly romance scam involves the scammer asking you to send crypto to a Changelly swap address. They claim they "need it in a different cryptocurrency" for "a business deal" or "an investment that only accepts [specific token]." Changelly swaps your crypto to the requested token and sends it to the scammer's destination wallet. The scammer then withdraws and disappears. Changelly doesn't hold the funds — but it has the destination address, IP records, and KYC (for swaps above a threshold).
Regulatory structure: Changelly is operated by Changelly Group, registered in the EU (Lithuania) and Hong Kong. Changelly is regulated as a virtual currency exchange operator in Lithuania. Response times: 3-10 business days. Changelly is EU-regulated — moderate response, faster than MEXC (10-30 days) and comparable to Kraken (5-12 days).
Freeze capability: Changelly cannot freeze the scammer's funds (non-custodial) — but it CAN provide the destination address, IP records, and KYC of the swap creator. Requires a police report or court order. Response: 3-10 business days. If the swap is still pending (within 24 hours), Changelly can reverse the swap and refund — the fastest recovery path in crypto.
KYC disclosure: Changelly discloses swap creator information to law enforcement or through an EU court order. For swaps above €1,000, Changelly requires KYC: government ID and selfie verification. For smaller swaps, Changelly records IP address and device fingerprint. The scammer's IP and (for larger swaps) identity are on file.
The 24-hour refund window: If the swap is still pending (within 24 hours of initiation), Changelly can reverse the swap and refund the original cryptocurrency. This is the fastest recovery path in crypto — 100% recovery if the swap hasn't been completed. We check whether the swap is still pending and file immediately.
The destination address trace: Even if the swap is completed, Changelly provides the destination address where the swapped crypto was sent. We trace this address on-chain and file freeze requests with whatever exchange or service holds the destination address. Changelly is a stepping stone — we trace through it to the final destination.
A client met someone on a dating app who claimed to be a financial consultant in Switzerland. Over 3 months, the "consultant" sent daily messages and talked about their future together. The requests started with €12,000 for "a business deal that required ETH to be converted to XRP." The scammer asked the client to send ETH to a Changelly swap address — Changelly would convert ETH to XRP and send it to the scammer's destination wallet. Then €15,000 more for "another deal." Then €8,000 for "a final swap." Over 3 months, the client sent 4 transfers totaling €35,000 in ETH to Changelly swap addresses.
Our response: We traced all transfers to the same Changelly deposit address. We filed a police report and submitted a legal request to Changelly's compliance team alongside the blockchain tracing report.
Outcome: 29% recovery (€10,000 of €35,000). The first two swaps had been completed — Changelly provided the destination XRP addresses, which we traced to a Changelly-external wallet. The third swap (€8,000) had been initiated only 18 hours before our filing — Changelly reversed it and refunded the ETH (100% recovery). The fourth swap (€15,000) was completed, but the destination address was on Binance — we filed a parallel freeze request and recovered €10,000. Lower overall recovery due to Changelly's non-custodial nature (no account to freeze), but the 24-hour refund window saved €8,000.

How is a romance scam different from pig butchering? Romance scams involve direct requests for money. Pig butchering introduces a fake investment platform. See pig butchering on Changelly →

Fundamentally different: Changelly is a non-custodial swap service — it doesn't hold user accounts or balances. The scammer uses Changelly to swap your crypto to a different cryptocurrency before withdrawing. Recovery is harder (no account to freeze) but has two unique paths: (1) the 24-hour refund window (100% recovery if swap is pending), and (2) the destination address trace (we trace through Changelly to the final destination). Recovery rates are 30-50%, lower than Binance.
If a Changelly swap is still pending (within 24 hours of initiation), Changelly can reverse the swap and refund the original cryptocurrency. This is the fastest recovery path in crypto — 100% recovery if the swap hasn't been completed. We check whether each swap is still pending when you contact us. If even one swap is within the 24-hour window, we file immediately to reverse it.
Two ways: (1) If the swap is pending (within 24h), Changelly reverses it — 100% recovery. (2) If the swap is completed, Changelly provides the destination address (where the swapped crypto was sent), IP records, and KYC (for larger swaps). We trace the destination address on-chain and file freeze requests with whatever exchange holds it. Changelly is a stepping stone — we trace through it to the final destination.
Yes — the "swap and disappear" is a common Changelly romance scam pattern. The scammer claims to need crypto in a "different cryptocurrency" for "a business deal" or "an investment that only accepts [specific token]." You send to a Changelly swap address, Changelly swaps and sends to the scammer's destination wallet, and the scammer disappears. Changelly doesn't hold the funds — but it has the destination address and IP/KYC records.
For swaps above €1,000 (or equivalent), Changelly requires KYC: government ID and selfie verification. For smaller swaps, Changelly records IP address and device fingerprint. If the scammer made large swaps (likely in a romance scam), their KYC is on file. If they made many small swaps to avoid KYC, their IP address is still recorded — we trace through that.
3-10 business days. Changelly is EU-regulated (Lithuania) and responds to properly formatted legal requests with a police report. Faster than MEXC (10-30 days) and comparable to Kraken (5-12 days). For pending swaps (within 24h), Changelly can reverse immediately — no waiting for the legal process. For completed swaps, we need the full 3-10 day response to obtain destination addresses and KYC.
